DescriptionThe series of drawings for the protagonists in the altarpiece begins with this sheet, the first of three life studies of naked male studio models, in keeping with the modus operandi that Maratti maintained to the end of his days. Here we see the seated Virgin with the Christ Child in her arms, his outline barley sketched. The male model – as is clear from the muscular shoulders and biceps – is captured in the naturalistic frontal pose that would be carried into the painting. There the Virgin differs only in that she is seated with her legs apart, her robes covering her down to her feet, leaving only her left foot visible.
