DescriptionThis is the most complete study for the painting. At the centre is the upper body of the angel in the act of sliding his sword back into its scabbard. His hands are clearly visible, and further down are studies for his left leg and his face, a superb evocation of an ideal angelic head reminiscent of those of Guido Reni. At the upper left is the staring head of the angel immediately behind the saint. The diminutive flying putti at the top and bottom of the sheet were not carried (exactly as drawn) into the painting.
