DescriptionLikewise, this is the only surviving drawing for the Agony in the Garden. On the left is a life study for the figure of Christ. Otherwise the rest of the sheet is crammed – somewhat obsessively – with repeated details of hands and feet: Christ´s right hand is studied no less than five times with minor variations in the way his fingers are extended; below is his left hand along with three studies of his right foot. On the verso are three studies of drapery falling from the waist of a standing woman and further sketches of male hands. Schaar did not suggest a connection with any known painting, but hypothetically the drapery could relate to that of the woman standing behind the Virgin in Maratti´s representation of her marriage, formerly on the lateral wall of the Chapel of St. Joseph in the church of Sant´Isidoro. The Painting is lost, but the composition is known from a replica that appeared on the art market. The correlation, however, is by no means clear-cut. there is a closer link with the robes of the female bystander at the left of the Visitation in Siena Cathedral, but it is not exact. The man´s left hand grasping a drapery fold, as does Joseph at the right of the same painting. The date of the Siena Visitation, however, is too late for there to be a connection with the present drawing.
