DescriptionThe old attribution to Sacchi comes as no suprise, given its stylistic affinities with his drawings. It was recently added to the corpus of the young Maratti´s drawings by Brink (2016), and represents the only study in Düsseldorf for the painting. At the top of the sheet are two studies for the head of St. Eulalia, one in reverse with respect to the painting. At the right are studies of her left hand, the Virgin´s feet, and two studies below that appear to represent the Virgin´s left hand in the act of opening her mantle. The child´s head is for one of the putti descending from the heavens, and the male head in three-quater profile appears to be connected with the devotee behind St. Eulalia. In the painting, he is depicted bearded.
