DescriptionAgain, this large sheet of male nudes drawn from life shows Maratti establishing the poses of figures destined for the composition. At the upper left, that of the seated Virgin; below, that of the angel standing with his left arm extended, along with a detailed study of his hand depicted resting on Santa Francesca Romana´s shoulder. Her kneeling pose is explored twice as we move towards the right-hand side of the sheet, as are her gesturing hands. In addition there are drapery folds and, at the very centre, the saint´s head in profile. Finally, at the upper right, is an extremely beautiful study for the head of the Madonna, very classical in style and close to how she appears in the painting. The subtle application of white highlights does much to enhance the softness of her complexion.
