BeschreibungCharacterised by an assured and incisive handling of red chalk, this sheet is undoubtedly one of the young Maratti´s finest achievements. He repeatedly studied the arms of the shepherdess at the left of the painting, bearing the weight of a basket on her head, Below there are sketches of the basket ans her slightly inclined head; though faintly indicated, the facial features match those in the painting perfectly. These detailed life studies attest to the artist´s determination to pin down the exact disposition of her arms, as well as the convoluted drapery gathered beneath her right elbow, and at the far right what appear to be the folds of the kneeling shepherd´s cloak. Maratti would use this study again for the woman in his Visitation of 1666 for Santa Maria della Pace, also bearing a basket on her head with her arms identically posed. He did not, however, replicate the head.
