John Gay war ein englischer Schriftsteller, der vor allem Gedichte, Erzählungen, Romane und Fabeln verfasste. Zusammen mit Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope und John Arbuthnot bildete Gay die als Scriblerus Club bekannte Gruppe von Tory-Satirikern.
